HOW TO GROW CACTI – FIVE EASY STEPS
Cacti and succulents are popular houseplants, particularly with children – they are often the first plants many of us grow. They’re simple to grow and care for, especially if you pick an easy variety.

“Very few of the common cacti and succulents succumb to neglect, but too much kindness can often lead to their demise. Contrary to popular belief, these plants don’t come from true deserts, but are usually found in areas with reduced rainfall. Evolution has given them the ability to store water to survive times of drought, whether other plants would dry up and shrivel.” Ian says that growing cacti is simple, as long as you meet the following five requirements:

Cacti need well-drained compost. Add one part grit to two parts multi-purpose compost.

Cacti need lots of light so choose a sunny windowsill, conservatory or greenhouse.

Observe the growing season, from the middle of March to the end of September. During this period give cacti a good watering and then let them dry out before you water again. Don’t let them sit in a wet saucer for long periods – a ‘soggy bottom’ could be fatal – and feed them occasionally with a liquid tomato fertiliser.

During the rest of the year observe a cool winter rest (5°C is ideal) with no watering.

Keep an eye out for pests such as mealy bugs or red spider mite and treat with an appropriate insecticide.
